Contrary to the Examiner's stated position (Final Act. 14--15), the burden did not properly shift to the Appellants to show that Alexander, when modified in view of the other references, would inherently possess the self-healing performance index of 0.1 as specified in claim 1. That would impermissibly require the Appellants to compare the claimed invention against the claimed invention. In re Tiffin, 443 F.2d 394, 399 (CCPA 1971) ("The examiner's composite process is appellants' process, and thus cannot be compared with it."). 

Rather, the Appellants can effectively rebut a prima facie case of obviousness by comparing the claimed invention against the closest prior art. In re Merchant, 575 F.2d 865, 869 (CCPA 1978).

"The scope of enablement ... is that which is disclosed in the specification plus the scope of what would be known to one of ordinary skill in the art without undue experimentation." National Recovery Technols. Inc. v. Magnetic Separation Sys., Inc., 166 F.3d 1190, 1196 (Fed. Cir. 1999).

Moreover, we find no evidence that the Examiner relies on impermissible hindsight reasoning as the Examiner's articulated reasons for combining the teachings of Narita, Sawai, and Tokiwa are supported by the prior art disclosures themselves.  Our reviewing court has recently summarized appropriate sources used in claim construction as follows: The words of a claim are generally given their ordinary and customary meaning, which is the meaning that the term would have to a person of ordinary skill in the art at the time of the invention. Claim language must be viewed in light of the specification, which is the "single best guide to the meaning of a disputed term." In accordance with Phillips, we first look to the actual words of the claims and then read them in view of the specification. Although courts are permitted to consider extrinsic evidence (e.g., expert testimony, dictionaries, treatises), such evidence is generally of less significance than the intrinsic record. Extrinsic evidence may not be used "to contradict claim meaning that is unambiguous in light of the intrinsic evidence." "The construction that stays true to the claim language and most naturally aligns with the patent's description of the invention will be, in the end, the correct construction." Profectus Tech. LLC v. Huawei Techs. Co., 823 F.3d 1375, 1380 81 (Fed. Cir. 2016) (internal citations omitted).

Further, producing, storing, and recognizing a digital representation of a physical object are "well-understood, routine, [and] conventional activities previously known to the industry." Content Extraction and Transmission LLC v. Wells Fargo Bank, Nat. Ass 'n, 776 F.3d 1343, 1347--49 (Fed. Cir. 2014) ("The concept of data collection, recognition, and storage is undisputedly well known. Indeed, humans have always performed these functions .... the use of a scanner or other digitizing device to extract data from a document was well-known at the time of filing, as was the ability of computers to translate the shapes on a physical page into typeface characters"). The "unconventional steps" and "limitations other than those well-understood, routine and conventional" are business-related steps that simply elaborate on the abstract idea.
