In other words, the focus of the Appellants was not on an improved mobile device or an improved server. Nor do the claims attempt to solve “a challenge particular to the Internet.” DDR Holdings, LLC v. Hotels.com, L.P., 773 F.3d 1245, 1256—57 (Fed.Cir.2014); cf. Intellectual Ventures I LLC v. Capital One Bank (USA) 792 F.3d 1363, 1371 (because the patent claims at issue did not “address problems unique to the Internet, ... DDR has no applicability.”).

We find that the claims are directed to processing and authenticating transaction details and sharing consumer experiences that can be implemented using only a generic computer system performing generic functions.

There is no indication that performance of the algorithm via the reducer/register would preclude performance via a generic computer. See DDR Holdings, LLC v. Hotels.com, L.P., 773 F.3d 1245, 1256 (Fed. Cir. 2014) (recitation of generic computer elements does not make a claim directed to an abstract idea patent-eligible).

Specifically, these networking operations are not steps of a real-world economic practice or other similar abstract idea performed in a computer network. See, e.g., BuySafe, Inc. v. Google, Inc., 765 F.3d 1350, 1355 (Fed. Cir. 2014) (noting that the "claims [in that case] are squarely about creating a contractual relationship"—an abstract idea). Instead, the present claims expressly limit the settings to a subscriber to a network and requires processing these settings in a particular way to affect the network's service. It is a challenge particular to networking.

Because the claims are not drawn to any abstract idea recognized by the courts under Alice 's first step of the inquiry, we need not determine whether an inventive concept transforms the method into a patent-eligible application. Here, we only note that "the claimed solution is necessarily rooted in computer technology in order to overcome a problem specifically arising in the realm of computer networks." DDR Holdings, 773 F.3d at 1257, quoted in 2014 Interim Guidance, 79 Fed. Reg. at 74,632. Accordingly, claim I is eligible subject matter.

We find Appellants' arguments unpersuasive. On its face, the term "primarily" in "primarily viewed by a principal user in a direction" is subjective, and Appellants have not pointed to anything in the claims or Appellants' specification that provides a standard for determining the scope of the term. Such subjective language renders the term indefinite. See DDR Holdings, LLC v. Hotels.com, L.P., 773 F.3d 1245, 1260 (Fed. Cir. 2014) ("When a claim term depend[s] solely on the unrestrained, subjective opinion of a particular individual purportedly practicing the invention, without sufficient guidance in the specification to provide objective direction to one of skill in the art, the term is indefinite." (citation and quotation marks omitted)). Moreover, because this language is arguably redundant with the language that immediately follows it, it is unclear how (or whether) the language alters the scope of the claims. Accordingly, we sustain the Examiner's indefiniteness rejection.
